Articles of the Week will be given to students each MONDAY and will be due on FRIDAY of that same week.  These assignments are GRADED assignments.  The article of the week will be an ongoing assignment, lasting from September until May.

The purpose of the Article of the Week is to expand students' background knowledge of the world and to make students stronger readers and writers. 

Article of the Week -- or AoW -- has two parts.  First, students read the text and annotate it.  I'm looking for mature thinking with their annotations.  Simply circling or underlining words or writing "wow" isn't mature thinking.  See my notes on the types of annotations that I'm looking for.  Secondly, students will write a one-page response which includes at least one paragraph that summarizes the article and one paragraph that shows reflection about the article. At the bare minimum, that's the front side of a full sheet of notebook paper; students can certainly write more than one page if they feel inspired to do so. The written repsonse paper can be handwritten or typed.
