12/09/13 - Students will complete a "warm-up" prereading activity that will provide the effect of stereotyping. Also, the student will be responsible for taking notes from the introductory powerpoint presentation that provides background information for The Outsiders. Lastly, students are responsible for defining the Ch. 1-3 vocabulary terms.




11/11/13 - While watching the movie version of The Five

                     People You Meet in Heaven, students will

                     complete the movie outline.

 

11/08/13 - After reading pages 154-196 of The Five People

                     You Meet in Heaven, students are to have

                     completed the accompanied Study Guide.

 

11/04/13 and 11/05/13 - 8th Graders will take the 2nd

                                              Study Island Benchmark in

                                              Reading.

1. In the first paragraph of the novel, and repeated several times throughout the book, is the line “every family is a ghost story.” What do you think that means? Who is the real ghost in the Benetto family?

3. Re-read the “Beginning” section. Now that you know the identity of the people(names), does your understanding of the section change?

6. On page 7, Chick says “Mothers support certain illusions about their children.” What does he mean by that statement? What about fathers?

04/24 - We are reading For One More Day by Mitch Albom. We are reading from the Kindles, so students will not have the text to read for homework. THE PSSA TEST PERIOD HAS ENDED.

*Students are to answer the study guide questions as we advance in the book.

Quiz (planned as a pop quiz) is scheduled for Friday, April 26th. Study Vocab List copied into your notebooks.

Continue to summarize each chapter in your notebooks.

 

 

 

04/08 - Review Literary Techniques, Genres, and Literary Terms to know in preparation for the upcoming PSSA Tests.

 

03/21 - Continue reading the short story unit to compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction. Also, we will identify literary techniques used throughout the text.

 

03/14 - Work on "The Rocking Horse Winner" Vocab Worksheet that will be due on Friday, March 15.

Reading Tip of the Day: Turn on Closed-Captioning on your TV to improve vocabulary, which in turn, improves reading.

 

03/07 - Students will be responsible for completing the Ch. 1 Study Guide for The Tipping Point. Also, a current news article and summary will be due on Monday, March 11. Remember that A.R. Points are due by March 15.

02/19/13 - After reading Ch. 9 and 10 of The Outsiders, complete the Ch. 9 and 10 Study Guide by tomorrow. We will finish reading the final two chapters  and corresponding study guide by Thursday. A Book Test is tentatively scheduled for Friday!

 

Important Reminder: The Outsiders Reading Project is due on Friday, Feb. 8th. Although there was time provided in class to work on the project, students are responsible to finish the remaining work on their own time by Friday, Feb. 8th.

  • The project entitled "Write Your Own Chapter" following our reading of Chapter 15 is due on Friday, Sept. 28th. When you "Write Your Own Chapter", be sure to include a title, use the author's style, and follow the plot. The chapter should be a minimum of two pages, maximum three pages, written or typed.  Please include one illustration of a scene that occurs in the chapter.
