BRIDGE DESIGN
Students will first use the program West Point Bridge Designer, which a program produced by the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. In this program, students are given a problem of building a highway bridge over a river valley. They use the interactive program to design a truss bridge, test it, and then optimizing the design to make it efficient.
Students can download the program free of charge by clicking on the banner to the West Point Bridge Contest site.
Students then will work in groups and design a truss bridge using toothpicks and glue. When they are finished, we then weigh them and test them to see how much they can hold. We the take the bridges weight and the weight it held and calulate the efficiency.
