What is Science?

Can you think like a scientist?

Students will review concepts learned in fifth grade, such as the Scientific Method, or the steps used to solve a problem:  Problem/Question, Hypothesis, Test/Procedure, Analyze Data, Draw Conclusions, Share Results.  Students will review the variables, such as:  independent variable, dependent variable, and constant.  (See pages 24-35)

We will discuss the steps used to solve the problems on the Apollo 13 space mission, and we will see the famous, "Houston, we've had a problem!" re-enactment.  We will learn that the Apollo 13 space mission was a "sucessful failure" because scientists gathered information/data from the mishappeninegs during the mission.  Click here to read more about Apollo 13, or you may also visit www.nasa.gov and search for "Apollo 13."

Students will also learn how scientists use tools and math.  They will describe some tools used in scientific investigations, such as:  beakers, pan balance, test tubes, spring scale, and microscope. (See pages 2-13)  Click here for a PowerPoint about tools.

Science inquiry skills are also part of this chapter.  They include skills such as:  observing, classifying/ordering, inferring, comparing, predicting, using numbers, using time and space relationships, mesauring, interpreting data, making a hypothesis, planning and conducting a simple investigation, using models, drawing conclusions, and communicating.  (See pages 18-22)

Students are encouraged to use their flashcards, pretests, and glossary to study for the vocabulary quizzes.  To review the concepts in the chapter for the Chapter Test, students should use class notes, corrected worksheets, bell ringers, and read pages 2-37.
