Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How many books are in the library?

answer:  Currently there are 12,320 books in our library, with 10,853 different titles.  New books are added to the library each year in August.

2.  How many books are the students permitted to sign-out of the library?

answer:  This varies by grade level.  Students in grades K, 1, and 2 are permitted to sign-out one book during each library class.  Students in grades 3 and 4 may sign-out two books per library class, and students in grades 5 and 6 can get 3 books per visit to the library.  However, students are able to sign-out more books as needed for special projects and under other circumstances.

3.  Do the students have to take a book out of the library?

answer:  No, providing the student is reading something they brought from their classroom library, public library, or personal home library.  This usually only occurs in the upper grades.

4.  Are all students permitted to get books from any section in the library?

answerNo, not all books are suitable to all readers.  Students in the younger grades have emerging reading skills.  Thus, a book from the fiction or non-fiction sections would not be appropriate for them as they are longer, and contain larger words.  Students in grades Kindergarten and one are limited to choosing books in the Easy Reading section of our library.  These books are shorter, contain a more limited vocabulary, and usually have pictures in them.  As the students begin second grade, they still choose books from the easy reading section.  As their reading skills grow throughout the year, they are eventually moved into the other sections of the library.  This usually happens between the second and third nine-week period. (This is an exciting time for them!)  Beginning with third grade, the students have access to all sections of the library for choosing books.

5.  Is a "card catalog" still used to find books?

answer:  Yes and no.  The traditional card catalog of years ago (a piece of furniture with many drawers containing thousands of cards about the books) has now been replaced by the computer.  Today students can use the on-line card catalog system to find a book by accessing the link "Glendale Online Library" found on Glendale's Website homepage.  Click on "elementary" and you are ready to search for a book (note that the high school library can also be accessed this way.)  More information on how to use the on-line card catalog can be found on the link for "Glendale Online Library."

6.  Can a student get more books if they have forgotten them at home on the day their class visits the library?

answer:  In the primary grades (K, 1, and 2) the answer is no.  Students must return the library book they signed out during the last weeks class for them to get a new library book the following week.  For the other grades, students can get a new book providing that they don't go over the total number they are permitted to sign-out.  For example, a fifth grader is permitted to sign-out three books per visit to the library.  If a student forgets one of those books, he/she can get one new book (2 books forgotten at home + one new book = 3 books total.)

7.  What happens when a book is lost or damaged?

answer:  Any library books lost or damaged beyond repair must be paid for by the student who has signed the book out.  This is Glendale School District policy.  Before a student can sign anything else out of the library, he/she must either find the book or pay for its replacement.  All books must be either returned or paid for by the end of the school year, or that student will not receive his/her report card on the last day of school.  Again, this is Glendale School District policy.  Students should notify the librarian if a book is lost, and he will let them know the replacement cost.  Minimum amount charge to replace a book is $15.00.

8.  Are fines charged for over-due books?

answer:  No, not in the elementary school.

9.  Can books be renewed for more than one week?

answer:  Yes, but usually four weeks is enough time to complete the book.

10. How are books chosen for the library?

answer:  A variety of methods are used to choose books for the elementary library.

                 *recommendations in professional journals

                 *recommendations from other librarians

*items needed to fill "gaps" in the collection

*books lost, stolen, ruined, or worn-out

                 *recommendations from teachers

                 *recommendations from students
