Welcome to 5th Grade!

Mrs. Ambrosiano, Mrs. Frey, Ms. Hofford, and Mrs. Iles would like to welcome you to an exciting new year. We look forward to your arrival in late August and hope you enjoy a restful, yet fun summer. Fifth grade students take the PSSA tests in Reading, Writing, and Math. The following basic skills have been taught since at least third grade. Unfortunately, we don’t have time to review them in-depth next year. To help you be prepared for 5th grade, we expect all students:

  • to write a paragraph (indent, capitalize, use a topic sentence, etc.)
  • to be able to recite the multiplication facts (1-10) in 5 seconds or less
  • to know your addition, subtraction, and division facts as well
  • to have read at least one good book (minimum of 100 pages) over the summer. Please record the information about the book on the form below and return it to your child’s Reading teacher in August. (Extra credit for this summer reading may be given in the first marking period!)

In order to help with back-to-school shopping later in the summer, we’ve included a list on the back of this paper. It includes some notes about things that you might not need to purchase, as well as suggestions on the best options for some supplies.

Your first set of folders (2-pocket, 3-prong) will be supplied for you. Folders wear out from use and sometimes need to be replaced. You will be responsible for replacing worn out folders. If you purchase these in the summer, they are cheaper and easier to find. You will need the following colors: green, yellow, dark blue, light blue, red, white, purple, and orange.

Have a great summer vacation!

Back-to-school shopping list

Important materials:

  • pencils
  • erasers (eraser caps and/or hand-held erasers)
  • book covers - book socks or brown grocery bags will last the longest … no sticky covers! If you plan on using book socks, be sure to have the LARGEST size available. Smaller sizes DO NOT fit our larger fifth grade books. These smaller book socks will damage and/or break the spines of our textbooks.
  • box of tissues (give to your homeroom teacher in the first week)

Optional materials:

  • pencil case (zippered ones that are cloth, plastic, or canvas work the best since they do not open if they are dropped, like the box ones)
  • lock for your locker (your teacher will need to have the extra key or the combination for the year)
  • second set of folders (2-pocket, 3-prong) in green, yellow, dark blue, light blue, red, white, purple, and orange IF you think the folders we give you will not last the whole year

More optional materials:

  • crayons (box)
  • colored pencils (box)
  • scissors
  • highlighter(s)
  • protractor
  • glue stick(s)
  • pencil sharpener (hand-held)
  • book mark
  • paper clips (small quantity)
