Sight Words

Sight Words

Each week in class we will be learning new sight words to put on our word wall. I expect your child to be able to read these words instantly. We also use these words during kid writing. Please practice these words at home. A good idea is to write them on index cards to create a word ring (the index card notebooks are great, all you have to do is write the words on each week). Have your child look for these words around your home, in books, on signs, etc. The more fluent your child is with these words the easier reading will be.

Power Towers: To play this game write the words on the bottom of Dixie cups. Take turns picking up a cup. If the student can read the word they can keep the cup. Students collect cups to build a tower. The student with the highest tower wins!

Parking Lot (for kids who love to play with cars): Use poster board to create parking spots in a parking lot. In each parking spot write a sight word. In order to park their car in the spot or take the car out of the spot they have to read the word.

Here is a great website that is full of practice ideas that are super fun!
