Individual and Group Counseling

The school counseling program at Kutztown Elementary School is here to help support you, your child, and the teachers so that your child may be the best learner they can be and have a successful and happy school year. There are several components to the counseling program, with two of those being Individual and Group Counseling.

Individual Counseling

Students often visit the school counselor at the request of parents or teachers to talk about issues that may be effecting their behavior or performance at school. Students can also request to see the counselor. Normally students come to discuss social issues or things that are bothering or distracting them. Students' discussions with the counselor are confidential, so the counselor may not be able to share much about your child's concern. You can be sure, however, that you will be told if your child indicates that he in danger or planning to hurt himself or others. Students are encouraged to discuss their feelings and concerns with their parents.

Group Counseling

School counselors often run "groups," and at some time your child might be invited to participate in one. These groups normally involve 3-6 children who meet for 4-8 sessions at an agreed upon time to talk about a particular issue such as study skills, changing families, friendship, grief, etc. Participation is voluntary and your permission will be sought in order for your child to be part of a school-based group. Group counseling encourages children to help each other, share ideas, respect others, and develop positive skills that will last a lifetime.
