Common Core Standards

Background

States are able to create their own state standards for education, as result over the years, there have been disparities throughout the nation, sometimes large, sometimes small.  This makes it difficult for universities and other institutions, including employers to properly evaluate high school graduates comparitively across the nation.

Over the past several years the standards have been informed by the best available evidence and the highest state standards across the country and globe and designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators from across the nation, so they reflect both our aspirations for our children and the realities of the classroom.  States by choice can adpot the Common Core Standards (all but 5 states - Alaska, Minnesota, Nebraska, Virginia, and Texas and 3 territories - American Somoa Islands, Puerto Rico, and Northern Mariana Islands have).  With most of the nation aligning to the same standards, the disparities will begin to fade.

We are currently in a transition phase, as are most other districts across the nation.  The Keystones will eventually replace the PSSA and the CDT's will eventually replace the 4-Sight.  Your patience, understanding, support, and assistance during this transitional phase are appreicated.

Common Core's Mission Statement:

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
