Elementary General Music

In music class, students are expected to:

1. BE RESPECTFUL

2. BE RESPONSIBLE

3. TRY YOUR BEST!!

If your child DOES NOT follow these rules, his/her individual homeroom classroom behavior plan will be used.

In music class students will learn:

1.  How to keep a steady beat.

2. How to match pitch & sing in tune.

3. How to read musical notation (rhythms and note names).

4. Names of pitched & unpitched percussion instruments and how to play them (and, in fourth grade, recorders).

5. How to compose & improvise music.

6. Lifelong skills, such as working together as a team, following directions, & having fun while learning.

In general, I believe students learn music first through movement and play. We play a lot of games to teach various musical skills. If you ask your child, "What did you do in music today?" they are likely to answer with, "Played some games." While this is true, they also learned a variety of musical skills. They probably didn't even realize they were learning! Students in kindergarten through third grade do not receieve grades in music class.
