Suicide and Prevention

Suicide CAN be prevented ...

There is NO TYPICAL sucide victim.  It happens to young and old; rich and poor.

Teen suicide is a very serious problem and one that can be prevented if you know the risk factors.  For instance, death by suicide is more common among males than females, but females are more likely to attempt suicide (or at least report it).

Making yourself aware of the risk factors and warning signs for suicide is an important part of keeping your child safe.  Also important is getting your child help for depression or other issues that may lead to thoughts of suicide.

If your child appears depressed, seek help immediately!  Depression is treatable through the use of medications and  talk therapy; both of which can be provided through outpatient programs.  Consult your doctor for more information.

Troubled children and teens may also be more at risk for suicidal thoughts or attempts.  If your child/teen is dealing ith a substance abuse issue, violence, or other troubling behaviors discuss these issues with your child/teen's school counselor, social worker, school nurse, or family doctor.
