Recognizing a Suicidal Person

Suicide CAN be prevented ...

 

The information below is Compliments of the American Association of Suicidology and the Schuylkill County Suicide Prevention Task Force

 

Fortunately these are some but not all of the common warning signs. 

When you act upon seeing these signs, you can save a life!

  

Recognizing a suicidal person

  • Family History of suicide
  • History of depression or other mental illness
  • Easy access to lethal methods (such as weapons)
  • Withdraws from friends and/or social activities
  • Loses interest in hoppies
  • Prepares for death by making out a will and final arrangements
  • Gives away prized possessions
  • Has attempted suicide before
  • Takes unnecessary risks
  • Has had a recent severe losses (death of a loved one, family problems, money, job, spouse, boy/girlfriend problems)
  • Is preoccupied with death and dying
  • Loses interest in their personal appearance
  • Increases their use of alcohol or drugs
  • Talks about suicide, death, and/or no reason to live
  • Expresses a sense of hopelessness
  • Has attempted suicide before
  • Faced ith a situation of humiliation or failure
  • Experiences drastic changes in behavior
  • ANY TYPE OF BEHAVIOR THAT IS NOT TYPICAL OF THAT PERSON
