SAFETY CONTRACT

SHOP SAFETY CONTRACT

  1. Wear approved safety goggles at all times.
  2. Remove wristwatches, rings, and other jewelry that might get caught in moving machinery.
  3. Tie up or contain long hair with an appropriate fastener.
  4. Loose clothing should either be taken off if appropriate, or tucked in to avoid getting caught in moving parts and machinery.  Loose sleeves should be rolled up.
  5. The shop is no place for practical jokes or “horseplay”.  This behavior is dangerous to you and your fellow classmates.  DO NOT THROW ANY MATERIALS IN THE SHOP FOR ANY REASON.
  6. Operate machinery and power tools with instructor’s permission and instruction.
  7. No sandals, open-toed or backless shoes are to be worn in the shop.
  8. Vise jaws should be used only for holding materials.
  9. There will be no yelling or screaming in the shop.
  10. Always walk in the shop.  Running is dangerous.  You might stumble or collide with a fellow student who is operating a machine.
  11. Get immediate medical attention for cuts, bruises and injuries no matter how minor.
  12. Report all machine failures, accidents and injuries to the instructor immediately.
  13. Use care when handling long sections of wood.  Watch for others who may be in your path.
  14. Tools must be used ONLY for their intended purpose.
  15. Use extreme care when carrying tools with pointed or sharp edges.
  16. Vandalizing of ANY school property (including tabletops, wood materials and tools) or wood projects will not be tolerated.
  17. Students are expected to be in class on time and ready to work at the beginning of each class period.
  18. Students are required to bring their planner and a pencil to class everyday.
  19. Students who are not able to participate in the shop for any reason should check-in with the instructor to see if an alternative assignment will be given.  Students who may fall under this category should bring homework, a book or other study materials to class in the event an alternative assignment is not available for that particular day along with a note from their parent or guardian explaining why they are not able to participate.
  20. Students with other needs included but not limiting to special safety glasses, hearing protection and dust masks are required to provide them at their own expense.  It is the responsibility of each student’s parents or guardian to insure that any equipment provided by the student meets or exceeds proper safety specifications.
  21. Clean up is everyone’s responsibility to maintain a safe shop.

I hereby pledge that I will follow all the safety guidelines listed above.  I will act accordingly and not
disrupt the teacher or my classmates while they are working.  If an accident or injury occurs, I must
report it to the instructor immediately.  I understand that safety is our top priority in the shop and that
horseplay will not be tolerated under any circumstances.  I also understand that not following these
rules is not only dangerous to myself and others, but has strict disciplinary consequences.  Students who
cannot follow these rules will be removed from the class.
