Language Arts SAS Standards
Language Arts at Park Hills
This year the language arts block will be held for 150 minutes. The Balanced Literacy portion will be held for 110 minutes and the grammar/writing portion will be held for 40 minutes daily. Through a balanced literacy approach, students will comprehend content, communicate effectively, and think critically through the integration of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The Balanced Literacy Block will include read alouds by the teacher, shared readings with the class, guided readings focused on the skills and strategies readers need to either get or be on grade level, and word work. Word work includes spelling and vocabulary. Required independent reading will be assigned each night for 20 minutes.
The Writing Workshop will expose students to three major styles of writing: narrative, persuasive, and informative.
In addition, grammar will expose students to the following topics (and more):
- Types of sentences/subjects and predicates
- Compound, complex and complete sentences
- Conjunctions
- Fragments and run-ons
- Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs
- Commas, quotations, abbreviations
