Level 2 Lesson Plans (Math)

In our second grade math class, we have a new math program, Everyday Math. You may see some things that seem a little different, or you may wonder why you do not see more practice papers.  Much of what we are doing is collaborative between students and between teachers and students.  You will also notice that there is a great deal of reading associated with this math as it tries to connect simple math concepts to real world situations.

Your child is fortunate to be in Mrs. Fiebig's and my math class as we have much opportunity to work in small groups (there are 3-4 adults in the room), and we have access to technology.  There is a SMART Board as well as ipads for student use.  We use some technology or hands-on activities nearly every day.

To help your child be more successful in math, involve them in household activities such as measuring for new curtains, telling time on an analog clock (a clock with hands), or counting out change to wrap.  When serving any food that requires cutting into equal pieces, talk to them about what you are doing.  Get them involved in a little shopping for themselves where they may have to keep track of the cost of several items in order not to "over-spend".

Practicing addition and subtraction math facts is always good.  This can be done in a fun way by using some of the suggested computer links for math.
