Short Stories

Unit #2

“All Summer in a Day”

In “All Summer in a Day,” Bradbury uses several kinds of figurative language. This language helps readers see, feel, and hear the events that take place.

For example, a simile compares two objects using a word such as like or as:

All day yesterday they had read in class about the sun. About how like a lemon it was.

Bradbury’s simile compares the sun with a lemon. It uses the word like.

A metaphor compares two objects without using words of comparison:

I think the sun is a flower, / that blooms for just one hour.

Margot’s poem compares the sun with a flower without using like or as.

  1. DIRECTIONS: Read each of the following passages from “All Summer in a Day,” and consider the comparison or comparisons it presents. On the line that follows, identify each comparison as a simile or a metaphor. (There may be more than one comparison in a passage.) Then, circle the things that are compared.

  1. [Margot] was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away, and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghost.

Simile or metaphor:________________________________________

  1. But [the children] were running and turning their faces up to the sky and feeling the sun on their cheeks like a warm iron.

Simile or metaphor:__________________________________________

  1. [The jungle] was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of fleshlike weed.

Simile or metaphor:_________________________________________

  1. Then, wildly, like animals escaped from their caves, [the children] ran and ran in shouting circles.

Simile or metaphor:__________________________________________

  1. DIRECTIONS: Choose a noun that is used in “All Summer in a Day,” and write your own simile or metaphor to describe it. You might consider the sun,

the jungle, the children, the tunnel, or the rain.
