Vocabulary Project #1—Create a Quiz

DIRECTIONS: I am tired of making up quizzes and tests for students. I no longer wish to do so, at least for now. However, Mr. DeSocio, our principal, seems to have a problem with this. Therefore, I have created this idea: you make up the quiz. Also, you are going to make up the answer key. Just follow these guidelines:

Guideline #1:

You will be using your vocabulary words to create this quiz. In other words, you will use your collected vocabulary words, definitions, parts of speech, etc. as the basis for this quiz. Then, decide what kind of quiz you want to create. Should it be all multiple choice, true and false, or fill-in-the-blanks? Or maybe it will be a mixture of all three or something else altogether. You will need to decide how you want to set up the quiz. Remember, it is only a quiz, a 10-question quiz.

Guideline #2:

Write a draft of the quiz first. In fact, that is what you will be working on in class this period. The draft should be finished by the end of the period.

Guideline #3:

Create an answer sheet. You must create one. How else do you think I grade your quizzes? In addition to the draft of the quiz, you will also be handing in a draft of the answer key.

 Guideline #4:

On the second day, you will review and proofread the quiz and the answer sheet. Make sure that you haven't made any mistakes on it (like spelling mistakes or weird and unclear directions). If I make a mistake and you were taking a quiz or test, then I guarantee that you would let me know about it. DO THIS BEFORE TYPING THE FINAL COPY!

Guideline #5:

Type it up, put it together, and hand it in. When everything is done, make sure that your name is on the quiz. You'll be handing in the following:

  1. Final typed copy of the quiz
  2. Final typed copy of the answer sheet
  3. Rough draft of the quiz
  4. Rough draft of the answer sheet

You may make a cover sheet if you like, but then staple or paper clip everything together before submitting it.

Due Date: Tuesday October 18, 2016

Vocabulary Journal: Teach a Vocab Word

So that we’re not doing the same old same old

Soon, we will be in the midst of the second marking period and will also be entering a new phase for our Vocabulary Journal. No longer will you be required to bring a word from home, define it in the dictionary, and write it in your journal.

What we will be doing

We will still be completing a Vocabulary Journal. However, things will move a little differently. Each student is now responsible for bringing in and teaching to the class one, and only one, vocabulary word. You will sit at the computer and take them through your specific word step by step. The class, in turn, will be writing down the information as you direct them to discover.

How to proceed

Starting Tuesday, there will be a sign up circulating through the room. You will sign your name next to the date on which you are going to teach your word to the class. Make sure that you jot down your date so that you remember it. Everyone must sign his or her own name. If you fail to sign up for a date by Friday afternoon, then you will be assigned a date and lose Preparation points for your project. It is your responsibility to be ready on that date.

What to do, what to do

Up to and including the day BEFORE you are to teach your word, you will submit your word to me on the last sheet of this packet for approval. If I okay the word, then you may proceed the next day. You, as the teacher, will be working on the computer. You must supply the class the Vocab Word Number, the Vocab Word, the Source, and the Sentence Source. After that, you will direct the class on how to proceed through the entry. The class will have their dictionaries, so make them do all the work. You will be graded according to the attached Evaluation Form. You, in turn, in your Vocab Journal, must indicate which word you student taught to the class.

But what if i’m absent?

If you are absent on the day you were to teach a vocab word, then the class will not be working on their Vocabulary Journal that day. However, we will make up that word on the first day that you return. You do not lose any points if you are absent. If another person is scheduled to teach, then we will complete 2 vocab words that day.

What if I’m not prepared?

If you are not prepared on the day you were scheduled to teach, then you receive a zero for the project, and the class may use the time to write up a back-up vocab word. It is everyone’s responsibility to have a back-up word of his or her own. Consider it as a just-in-case-word.

The class’s responsibility

When someone other than myself is teaching the class, the students in the class will conduct themselves with the utmost dignity. That means that if you are fooling around, calling out, or just not paying attention and not doing what it is you are supposed to be doing, then you run the risk of receiving a zero for this project, detentions, phone calls home, and any other horrors I can think of.

The grade

Attached is an evaluation form. Notice that this project is worth 33 points. That is 33 points in addition to handing in your vocab journal for the second marking period.
