Social Studies

The topics planned for Social Studies are – Economics, Geography, Civics & Government, History.

Our classrooms are set up as communities.  We use class money in our own class economy system.  Students will fill out applications for class jobs.  Two students each semester will be elected to be our class co-mayors.  These students will assist in the day to day operation of the class.  The co-mayors will also be a part of our school wide positive behavior team.

Students are paid for the work they do in class and in turn use that money to pay their "bills" and to purchase the things they want.  Many of the classroom decisions are made by the classroom community.  This gives the students a sense of ownership in their school.

The geography we study is that of the United States.  They learned about the world in third grade and Pennsylvania in fourth.  Students will choose a state they would like to study, research it, and then share their findings with the class.

In the fall we visit Philadelphia for a day.  Students will get to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross' house, and other historical sites.

Many of our history lessons this year will be done through comparing and contrasting different types of literature about events in United States history.

We are also planning an exciting civics unit that will involve incorporating some parental and community resources.
