Dear Parents/Guardians:

 

The more time students spend reading, the better their reading skills become. The better their reading skills, the easier it is for them to succeed in all subject areas--and in life. Because of this, getting students to read more and enjoy it more are important goals in seventh grade language arts. To accomplish these goals, I would like each student to read independently for 30 minutes 15 times during a 25- to 28-day block. But to do so, I need your help.

 

I’d like you to sign the accompanying Independent Reading Assignment (IRA) sheet each night that the 30 minutes has been reached. Please do not sign it unless you are sure your child has done the reading. These sheets will usually be assigned twice each marking period, and each is worth a 30-point homework grade. Please be aware that students will be encouraged to also read during an every-third-day period called Enrichment and that the presiding teacher will sign the sheet in that circumstance.

 

Since reading is so crucial to your child’s academic and social development, you may want to do more than just initial a sheet. Here are two suggestions:

 

1. Find out what your child is reading and discuss it with your child. Perhaps you could read some of the same books or novels.

 

2. Encourage your child to do specific types of reading: novels, biographies, or any books that tell a story. Research has proven that reading this type of literature helps most to improve comprehension.

 

Through our combined efforts, I hope to improve your child’s reading comprehension and engender an appreciation for the written word. If this occurs, the benefits will be apparent not only in language arts, but also in other classes and in life.
