Pronouns take the place of nouns. This way we do not need to use names over and over again, or list all of the people in a group.

 

Shelly went to Shelly's dentist appointment. Shelly received a sticker!

Shelly went to her dentist appointment. She received a sticker!

 

Shelly, Jack, Henry, and I are going out to play.

We are going out to play.
