COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Criminal Justice provides the student at PVHS with the opportunity to study the justice system in the United States. The course will cover constitutional law, criminal and civil law, the trial procedure, and the juvenile justice system. Current events dealing with politics, law, and both domestic and foreign issues will also be part of the course.

 

TEXTBOOK:

“Criminal Justice Today” by Frank Schmalleger.

Students are responsible for the CD-Rom located on the back cover of their textbook.

 

STUDENT OBJECTIVES:

  • Analyze the rights of the individual in relation to the need for public order in society.
  • Identify the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
  • Identify the importance of the Constitution in the justice system.
  • Identify and analyze the Constitutional Freedoms of the United States.
  • Analyze and understand both the criminal and juvenile justice system in United States. (Due Process of the Law, Rights and Responsibilities, Civil and Criminal trials)
  • Analyze important current events affecting the United States.
  • To become active, well-informed, involved members of our democratic society.

 

GRADING:

Grading for each marking period is based on a system using total points.  This system allows for all assignments (i.e. tests, quizzes, homework, projects) to be weighted equally in determining the students overall average per marking period.  Points per assignment will be determined by the instructor. Late assignments without a excused absence will not be accepted. As an example of how this grading system works see the following example:

 

            Marking Period 1:

                        Homework Total Possible Points = 500

                        Test/Quizzes Total Possible Points =300

                        Projects Total Possible Points = 200

            Marking Period 1 Total Possible Points = 1000

            Student Points Earned = 800/1000

            Student Average for Marking Period 1 = 80%

 

MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS/TESTS and QUIZZES:

Any work missed by the student due to excused absences must be completed within five days of returning to class.  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain and complete this work within the five day period or a zero will be received for the assignment/test or quiz.  Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments given during each chapter will be available to the student in the make-up files located in the classroom.  Students must schedule to take any tests and/or quizzes with the instructor following their assigned class period.       

 

CLASS REQUIREMENTS AND RULES:

  • Class attendance with textbook, notebook and pen or pencil.
  • Assignments must be completed on time. Late assignments will not be accepted.
  • NO food or drink is allowed in class
  • Be on time and prepared for class
  • Raise your hand to be recognized
  • BE RESPECTFUL
