Title I

Reading Strategies

What do I do when I'm reading and get stuck on a word?  Ask yourself...
-Does it make sense?
-Does it look right?
-Does it sound right?

If you are having trouble reading a word, try this...
-Say the beginning sound.
-Look at the pictures for clues.
-Look for chunks and sound it out.
-Ask yourself what would make sense.
-Say, "blank" and read to the end of the sentence.

Try the "5 Finger Rule" to determine if the book is on your level...
-1. Select a book
-2. Read the first couple of pages.
-3. Every time you meet a difficult word, hold up one finger.
-4. When 5 fingers are up, STOP! This is not a "just right book"
     -4-5 fingers - too hard
     -1-3 fingers - just right
     -0 fingers - too easy
