ELA INFO

ELA grades will be determined by daily homework, reading logs, literature circles, written responses, papers, projects, and quizzes.  All homework is posted online and is accessible via the homework link above.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me.

Students are expected to read 100 minutes per week and log those minutes on a reading metacognitive log.  Parents must sign to confirm the student is reading.  After each 20 minutes of reading, students must complete a metacognitive log entry.  Students should complete no less than 5 metacognitive logs per week to turn in for a grade along with the signed reading log.  These will be collected every Friday.

We are currently working on elements of fictional stories. This week we will continue our first module.  We will be reviewing theme this entire week.  Most of the first module can be found in Unit 1: What Makes a Good Story in our McDougal Littell Literature Reader. The unit begins on page 21.  This week's lessons will come from Unit 3: The Big Idea. The unit starts on page 305.

Students will also be reading Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls.  Students must complete vocabulary and comprehension packets as they read the novel. Students will be given some time to read in class, but will also be required to read during free time and at home.  At the end of the novel, the AR test will be given as a 100-point comprehension test.  For background information or a copy of the chapter packets, please click the link at the top of the page.

On Monday, we will review the concepts taught on theme by reading Gombei and the Wild Ducks on pages 309-311 in our literature reader.  Students will also be assigned a Study Island practice assignment on theme that will be due 9/24 at 2:45pm.  On Tuesday, students will take the Theme Post Test and then be given time to work on Study Island or their metacognitive logs.   On Wednesday and Thursday, we will begin to build background knowledge for our first novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls.  On Friday, we will begin reading the novel and answering questions in our comprehension packets.  Metacognitive logs will be due on Friday.  For more information on Study Island, please scroll down to the "Study Island" section of this webpage.

AR Requirements & Rewards

All students are required to read 14 points per marking period. AR books should be 5th grade level or higher unless approval is given by the ELA teacher.  You can use the AR Book Finder to identify the number of points and reading level of a book.  Extra points do not carry over to the next marking period. AR tests can only be taken in ELA classrooms.  The number of AR points earned each marking period will count as one - 100 point test grade using the grading scale below.

14 points = 100%
13 points =   97%
12 points =   94%
11 points =   90%
10 points =   88%
  9 points =   85%
  8 points =   82%
  7 points =   79%
  6 points =   76%
  5 points =   73%
  4 points =   69%
  3 points =   64%
  2 points =   53%
  1 point   =  50%

AR Rewards
Students earning 7 AR points or more in any month from October to March will earn a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  This is a rewards program called Book It!   Students can also qualify for an AR party that is funded through SMART.  We hold one AR party at the end of each marking period for students who read beyond the required reading.  The point requirements increase each marking period.  Books read for ELA class DO count toward AR grades and rewards.

Marking Period 2- - -30 AR Points
