  1. Review the syllabus and expectations for this course.
  2. Review the IB Learner Profile. Apply the traits to the main character in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, another book you read this summer, or a major work you studied last year.
  3. Using bullet points, identify 1-2 strengths and 1-2 weaknesses this character has. Discuss in pairs. Share in whole group.

  1. Introduce and explain the purpose of the novel study and how it fits into the IB curriculum.

  • What strategies does the author use to engage you in the opening of the novel? (If she didn’t engage you, explain why.)
  • Find references to the disconnect between Kambili’s thoughts and words.
  • Identify the implied references to domestic violence. Analyze the relationship between Mama and Papa and how Mama copes.
  • Analyze Papa’s role in the church and his attitude toward religion.
