Ukrainian Eggs

Ukrainian Eggs

For many years, students in my class have been creating original Ukrainian Easter Eggs.  My mom, Janet Wilk helped out every year with this project until her passing in July 2007.   These are real chicken eggs that have been blown out dyed various colors and waxed in several steps

Each color and symboll on an Ukrainian egg means something.  In the Ukrainian egg that students create, the color yellow generally smbolized a successful harvest and wisdom.  The color pink is vigorous color and means the sun, happiness in life, hope, and passion.  The color green means Spring or rebirth of nature and the wealth of the plant kingdom.  The color blue means sky, air, magic, and good health.  The color black often signified the darkest time before dawn.  The last color used in this egg is white  White symbolizes purity.

The stars is the pattern that is used in this egg.  Ever since ancient times, the star symbol represented success.  Stars are represented with even numbers, six, or eight points, because they are much easier to draw and also because even numbers were believed to foretell good fortune. The star is one of the most popular symbols used on psyansky and is second in importance only to the sun.

Ukrainian people have been decorating eggs for thousands of years.
