Thank you for visiting Room 217's class website! Please look through this website for important information for this school year. If you have any questions about our program or progress please don't hesitate to contact me! I am looking forward to working with you this year!

Please note: I will be sending weekly emails home with upcoming dates and assignments.  Also, your child's tests and projects will be sent home to be signed to help you stay up-to-date on how your child is doing in English-Language Arts.  And finally, I use Google Classroom for ELA so feel free to check in regularly with your son or daughter by asking them to see or connect to their work online.

About Mrs. Shaffer

This is my eighth year teaching here at Park Hills Elementary in the 5th Grade.  I'm in my tenth year of teaching.  Before teaching at Park Hills, I was a 6th grade teacher for two years at Shallow Brook Intermediate in the Northeastern School District.  I was also at Spring Forge Intermediate, which is also in the Northeastern School District.  I received my certificate in Elementary Education from Millersville University (MU). I also have my Masters in Elementary Education from MU.  In a prior life, I was an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).  My first degree was actually in Accounting from the University of Pittsburgh.  I now use all of my range of experiences to shape my students, making learning more meaningful and real to them.

I love the Steelers, enjoy cooking and like to stay active.  I can be found with a good book in my hand any night of the week and I like to pass some of these passions, particularly reading onto my students. :)  I have a loving husband who is as supportive of and passionate about education as I am. I am also a proud mother of my two sons, Jacob and Tyler.  Jacob is entering kindergarten this year and Tyler is entering his second year of preschool.  I love spending time doing things like visiting Hershey Park, traveling to OCMD, or finding rubbings through the York County Library Program with them!

Language Arts Vision for 2020-2021

My vision for language arts success this year in Room 217 is to get all students reading and writing with passion, making connections to the real world, engaging in meaningful discussions, and thinking at higher levels.  I also think that it is important to try and fail, then to never try at all.  Effort and goal-setting are important ingredients to finding success.  Having a growth mindset will be a big part of our classroom focus this year.

*I am excited about the 'Voice and Choice' options that are available with the 1:1  devices for every student again this  year in 5th grade.  In addition, I am in year two of flexible seating.  Students will learn how to help themselves learn best. If you every have any questions about this, or something we are trying in class, please don't hesitate to ask, or I will find someone that can if I don't know the answer.
