Welcome Parents & Students!

Thank you for visiting our class Website. Please visit often to get the latest news and information on what is happening in our class. If you have any questions about our program or progress please don't hesitate to contact me! I am looking forward to working with you this year!

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!  This year your child will be learning grammar, vocabulary, writing and literature in Language Arts class.  It will be a challenging year for most students, but with your support and encouragement it will be a great year!

Your child is required to have a folder and a notebook or a binder; a highlighter; pen or pencil; AR book.

Each night your child should be working on homework.  Homework will be listed on the board everyday and students will be reminded to record the assignments in their agenda book.

The majority of the school year will revolve around grammar.  Some of the topics will be a review of the basics (sentences, nouns, verbs…), but the material will become more difficult as the year progresses.  With the completion of each chapter, there will be an exam.  As mentioned above we will be learning some literature.  We will be reading stories by Edgar Allen Poe, William Shakespeare and classic mythology.  During these lessons students will be responsible for knowing vocabulary, information about the author, and details about the stories we read and movies that we viewed.  There will be an exam at the completion of the unit.

You can expect that your child will have a vocabulary list on a weekly basis.  Almost every Friday students will be tested on the vocabulary from the previous week and receive a new list.  With each lesson definitions are due on Monday, synonyms/antonyms are due on Tuesday, analogies are due on Wednesday and sentences are due on Thursday.  Students will be completing essays on a bi-weekly basis.  Many of these essays will reflect their own experiences; however, a research paper must be completed this year.  Essays are graded according to the current PSSA rubric.  We will also utilize a program called “My Access”.  This program allows students to type their essays on the Internet.  When they have completed the essay, they submit their essay and a score is immediately generated.  The web page address is: www.myaccess.com.  Each student will have his or her personal ID and password.

The behavior of your son/daughter is crucial in his/her education and the education of his/her classmates.  All school rules will be enforced!  I expect that these rules will be followed at all times; failure to do so may result in a discipline referral, written assignment, seat change, or lunch detention.  If there is a recurring problem, you will be contacted.

If at any point your child is having difficulty, please contact me so that we can make arrangements for tutoring.  I am here to see that your child succeeds in Language Arts class.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to an excellent school year with your child!  Please remember that you play and important role in your child’s education.  If you make it a priority, your child will do the same!
