This chapter focuses on evidence of continuity and change in several early civilizations in Asia and the Americas.  It looks at the impact of the physical setting on the development and survival of the Indus Valley civilization, the effect of people's beliefs on the formation and growth of Chinese civilization, and the invention and transmission of ideas and ways from one civilization to another in Middle America.

In what is today Pakistan, archaeologists have unearthed the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro.

This city had carefully planned wide straight streets, a bathhouse, government buildings and a storage shed for their grain.
