Due Date:____________

Newspaper Project:  Students will research various resources to create an “old time” history newspaper from the colonial/Revolutionary War era.

Overall Presentation:  Newspapers should reflect authenticity, creativity, and style.  Have fun with it! You are the publisher of your own colonial newspaper. Using tea bags/coffee and burning the edges can help the paper look aged. A rubric with point values will be distributed.

Criteria:

  • Students should create a standard size newspaper (22X12) including the following:
  • Newspaper will consist of 4 pages total. (2 front and back)
  • Have a title/name on the newspaper (create your own).
  • Paper should have at least three factual stories from that era.
  • Paper should have at least 3 headlines and 3 sub-headlines with their articles.
  • The newspaper should reflect a colonial/revolutionary era including people, places, landmarks, and facts from that era.
  • Newspapers will reflect stories from the mid to late 1700’s and do not have to have the same date’s information. (The paper can be over a months, 6mths time period etc.).
  • Font size should be 12 to 14.
  • Pictures should be included. At least one picture for each article and then as many as needed/wanted to fill up the newspaper.

Layout:

  • Two pages should be information (articles/facts) from that era and two pages are other things you would find in a newspaper. Again, the first two pages have your three factual stories.
  • Your newspaper should look like a real newspaper with appropriate stories, facts, and headlines….just in the colonial era!
  • Things you would put in a newspaper include comics, obituaries, horoscope, local news, police news, Dear Abby, items for sale, real estate, advertisements, help wanted, fashion, recipes, wanted, missing, etc….all of these topics would reflect colonial times.
  • All pages should be full, no open spaces. Planning should include your layout of articles, pictures, ads, columns etc.
  • Points will be deducted if there is a lot of open/blank space.

Topics for news stories can include any/all of the following events:
