Make A Difference Day
For the fifth year in a row, the Owen J. Roberts School District particpated in a huge endeavor that benefits our community’s local food bank, The North Coventry Food Pantry. After months of preparation and planning, the community celebrated the Owen J. Roberts School District’s 5th Annual Make A Difference Day event on Saturday, October 23, 2010.
Make A Difference Day is a challenge given by USA Weekend Magazine to everyone to do something in their community to make a difference. Mrs. Venza, coordinator of Owen J. Roberts School District's Make A Difference Day, embraces this challenge and encourages young and old, students and community members, to help those less fortunate in our community by donating enough non-perishable food, paper goods, and personal care items to fill a school bus to the brim!
During the summer we have planning meetings and begin to rally the service groups in our district to lead the charge in each of our buildings. Two weeks prior to the October event, all of the schools in our district collect donations of food, paper goods, and personal care items. Information is disseminated into the community via our district website, newsletter, the local newspapers, and by hanging flyers up in local churches and businesses asking community members to attend the event and bring donations.
Over the past four years, Congressman Jim Gerlach, State Senator John Rafferty, State Senator Andy Dinniman, State Representative Tim Hennessey, and State Representative Kurt Schroder have attended as distinguished guest speakers. A community member or group is honored at the ceremony for their dedication to the community through volunteerism.
Please stay tuned for summer planning meetings dates/times/locations and SAVE THE DATE for the 6th Annual Owen J. Roberts Make A Difference Day Event which will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2011!
