Homework / Planners

Students are responsible for completing homework and returning it to the teacher.  Students write the day's homework assignments into their planner.  Parent / Guardians need to check and sign planner.  Planners are checked everyday by teacher, so parents can write notes or messages in planner.

Recess / Study Room

Students need to wear sneakers during recess time.  On cold days we may still go outside, so please dress appropriately for the weather.  A study room is set up for students to complete tests and work.

Reading

Reading books are the McGraw-Hill Wonders Reading Series.  We spend a week 6 days on a story..  Students learn vocabulary words and definitions.  Vocabulary words are on the weekly page that is sent home at the start of a new story.  Students will read from a reading book. Reading tests assess vocabulary, comprehension, open - ended questions.  After each unit ( 5 stories), students write stories with a variety of genres.  Students find topics, write first drafts, edit, revise, and publish final copies.

Math

The Math Series called “Go Math” by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  This math series has students learn and practice math strategies.   Homework / Remembering worksheets are used to practice concepts taught in class.

Students make multiplication cards in class.  They keep them in thier binders in a pencil pack.  Students should study every night.  Students are tested on their facts every Tuesday.  If they pass thier test, they get the next set of facts and continue practicing.

Spelling

The series goes along with the Reading.  Students are tested on 15 basic words and 2 challenge words that follow the unit’s pattern, and 3 review words.  Students should practice every day. Tests are given on Day 5..  A Review Test and Spelling Bee are given after 5 units.  The winners of the Spelling Bee compete in the final Third Grade Spelling Bee.

English

This series goes along with the reading book.  Students learn a concept for each story.  We work in our books and practice sheets in class.  Students are quizzed on the concept.

Social Studies

IN Social Studies, we will discuss map skills and current events.

Science / Embryology / Rocks and Minerals / Plant Development

This is the Scott – Foresman series.  We will be covering as many chapters as we can to prepare the students for the fourth grade PSSA Science test.  Chapters are broken down into lessons.  We cover a lesson in class and review vocabulary and lesson concepts.  Students take home books to reread lesson and complete a review page.  A test (open book) is given at the end of each chapter.

We also hatch chicken or duck eggs in the Spring.  Students learn how an embryo grows inside an egg known as “Embryology”.  We work in coordination with the Penn State Extension Office.

We complete a hands-on science kit on Rocks and Minerals.  Students learn to identify different rocks and minerals by investigating and exploring rocks and minerals.

Also, we study Plants and Plant Growth using a hands - on science kit.  Students learn the life cycle of a plant.  Students plant seeds, grow plant, pollinate flower, and harvest seeds.

RTI : (Response To Invervention)

Students are instructed in small groups to review/practice Reading and Math strategies and skills.

Book Reports

With the absence of the Accelerated Reading Program, students will complete quarterly book reports.  The book reports have to be based on a third grade level book or higher.  Students complete reports by following directions and checklists.  A rubric is used to grade students work.  Students create projects that relate to the monthly theme report.
