Chapter 10

Chapter 10 Cell Growth & Division

Big Idea #9:  Cells grow, and new cells come only from the division of a pre-existing cell.

  1. Cells absorb nutrients at a rate proportional to their surface area and metabolize them at a rate proportional to their volume. (S11.B.1.1.3)
  2. Cells grow when they can take in more nutrients through their plasma membranes than they can metabolize in their interior. Cells may divide when their metabolism exceeds nutrient absorption. (S11.B.1.1.3)
  3. Before a cell divides, all of its genetic machinery is duplicated in a process known as mitosis. (S11.B.1.1.3; S11.B.2.2.2)
  4. Chromosomal segregation in mitosis ensures that the daughter nuclei have the same genetic information as the mother nucleus. (S11.B.1.1.3; S11.B.2.2.2)
  5. Cytokinesis completes cell division by dividing the cytoplasm into two daughter cells. (S11.B.1.1.3; S11.B.2.2.2)
  6. Each of these duplicated chromosomes goes into a daughter cell. Therefore, one mother cell gives rise to two complete daughter cells. (S11.B.1.1.3; S11.B.2.2.2)
  7. Cell differentiation occurs many times during development of a multicellular organism giving rise to a diversity of cell types. (S11.B.1.1.3)
