Welcome Parents & Students!

Welcome to 3rd Grade!!!!  Here on our class website you will be able to find very valuable information that will be useful throughout the year.  Please make sure you check out each page to learn more about homework, 100 Book Challenge, announcements, cool websites and our schedule.  Our class website will be updated weekly so make sure you check back often to find out what is going on in 3S!

In 3rd grade our reading series focuses the children on reading to learn.  Strategies for developing reading skills, such as comprehension, retelling, story elements, fiction/nonfiction, context clues, author's purpose, interpreting literature and more, will be taught and reinforced daily.  Students will also be participating in the 100 Book Challenge, a program designed to have students reading on their independent level.

Our math series has students reviewing the basic concepts of addition and subtraction but steadily moving into multiplication and division.  Problem solving, measurement, geometry are a few other topics that your child will be learning this year. Hands on activities will also be highly integrated into our math class.

The students will learn about plants, animals, rocks and ecosystems in science class.  Our social studies curriculum focuses on the community, government and current events.

During the spring 3rd grade will take the PSSA standardized test.  I will be preparing the children for it throughout the year.  The students will be taking many practice PSSA tests as well as taking Study Island Benchmark assessments.  The Study Island Benchmark mimics the PSSA, so it will prepare the students for the look and feel of the test.

We have two great computer programs that we will be using this year.  Study Island is a program that will help students practice and build their reading and math skills.  The Reading Eggs computer program tests students in the area of reading.  It then sets them on individualized learning paths based on their results.

Technology is a very important part of my classroom.  Throughout the year I will be using various forms of technology to enhance instruction.  The Internet will be used for research, Microsoft Word for typing stories, the Smart Board for Power Point presentations and the Classroom Performance System (CPS) will be used to take tests.

I encourage strong parent involvement in my classroom.  I will be communicating with you through parent bulletins and conferences, if need be.  If you ever have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me at the school (669-9411) or email scarcellak@panthervalley.org
