As described in the GJSD Course of Study booklet, this course is intended to equip students with the reading comprehension skills and effective writing skills necessary to achieve success on the Reading and Writing PSSA’s as well as in life. Additionally, this course will seek to strengthen basic study skills, such as note-taking, that can be applied across all academic areas. It is the expectation that each student will learn to employ various reading strategies necessary to understand complex texts at a sophisticated level. Students will practice interacting with multiple forms of texts and develop an awareness of how various literary devices impact the effectiveness of a given text. Students will master a multitude of test-taking strategies useful for formal assessment tests; additionally, students will gain an understanding of text organization and structure useful for both reading and writing.
