Course Description:

                Fifth Grade Math – Pearson Series

The fifth grade math course is designed to teach the foundational skills of mathematics that includes knowledge of numeration, computation, geometry, measurement, reasoning, problem solving, creativity, mathematical life skills, and calculator skills among others.

Course Objectives and Goals:

The objective is for the students to learn and remember the foundational skills of mathematics.  In order for the students to achieve these skills it is essential that all the homework assignments are completed on time.  The goal is for every student to enjoy math and see how important math is in everyday life situations.

Determination of Grades:

Approximately every week and a half to two weeks students will be assessed on the topics previously covered through the means of a topic test.  Quizzes and other assessments will be used to check understanding.  The breakdown of the grading scale is as follows:

                Topic Tests: 50%

                Quizzes:  20%

                Notebooks:  10%

Projects / Study Island:  10%

Homework:  10%

**The order of the topics is subject to change with the discretion of the teacher.

**Students should show all necessary work and label answers on topic tests.  Always check your work before you turn in the test.

Classroom Rules and Consequences:

I believe that all students can behave appropriately in our classroom.  I will not tolerate any student hindering the learning process of any other student or class.

Requirements:

  1.  Students will not interfere with the learning process of themselves or others.
  2. Students will be courteous to others.
    1. Students
    2.  Teachers
    3.  Visitors
    4.  Etc.
  3. Students will be prepared for class.
    1. Homework
    2. Textbooks / Notebooks
    3. Pencil or other writing tool
    4. Etc.
  4. Students will do their best to participate in class and be attentive during the lesson.
  5. Students will use appropriate language in class.
  6. Students will refrain from chewing gum.

Consequences:

  1. Warning
  2. Change of seat, to better accommodate learning of all involved.
  3. After school detention, phone call / email home to parents.

Any situation that may occur not listed specifically on the syllabus will be handled at the discretion of the teacher.

*consequences are cumulative.  For example, if you choose to break the rules three times, you will face the consequences in steps, one, two, and three.

Needs:

  1.  Book must be covered.
  2. Students need a pencil daily.
  3. Students must complete their homework daily.
  4. Students must have their book and notebook daily.

Homework:

Always copy the problems onto your homework sheet.  Your homework sheet should always have your FULL NAME and / or code.  Show all necessary work to complete your problem.  Label your answers.  Check your work.
