Health and Physical Education

What is K-3rd grade working on this marking period?!

Currently students in Kindergarten are learning about our community helpers. Students are learning about fire fighters, EMT workers, optometrists, police officers, doctors and nurses. Students are having a great time creating their own book about these people in our community.

Students in first and second grade are spending their physical education classes playing with the parachute. The parachute helps students understand why it is so important to follow directions and listen. Students are not only working their arm muscles during this unit, they are also working their brains! While learning about the parachute first grade students are also learning about their mental and emotional health. Students are learning about changes that can occur in our lives and different feelings you may have about these changes. Students in second grade are learning about the anatomy of their brain and their heart!

Third grade students are currently learning about their personal mental health. Students are learning about how they are unique and what makes them special. Students are also learning about role models and will be practicing their writing skills as they write letters to their role models.

What have we learned so far this year?!

* Locomotor  (walk, run, hop, jump, skip, leap, gallop, slide)

*Non locomotor Skills (bend, turn, twist, push, pull, stretch, balance, rock, sway)

* Fitness Testing (mile run, sit and reach, pull ups, shuttle run and sit ups)

* Tag-Dodge-Flee-Chase

This unit consists of lessons teaching students how to tag, dodge, flee and chase. Some activities included in this lesson are:

Couch Potato- This activity teaches children about what a couch potato is and why it is important to not be a couch potato! We learn about eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, exercising and getting up off the couch and being active. Students use various locomotor movements to travel around the playing area. If a student is tagged by the "remote control", they move to the couch where they sit down and pretend to be lazy. To re-enter the game another student retrieves a fruit or vegetable from the "fridge", brings it to a couch potato and tells them to "get off the couch and exercise". The couch potato needs to prove that they are not a couch potato by performing a chosen exercise. (push ups, jumping jacks, etc)

Other games included in this unit are: Oogedy Boogedy tag, spiders and flies and sailors and sharks.
