Ms. Paukovitch's First Grade Class
Hello Parents! Welcome to First Grade!
I hope you had an enjoyable summer. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year and working with your child. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a few important things about our first grade classroom.
SNACK
We will be having a short snack/lavatory break in the morning. Please send in a healthy snack (yogurt, fruit, etc.) to school with your child. Please refrain from sending in candy. Also, due to this year's food allergies and shared surfaces within the classroom, please refrain from sending in any snacks that contain peanuts/peanut butter/ tree nuts/nut oils. Thank you for your support and understanding of this potentially life-threatening allergy. Only students who bring in a snack will have a snack to eat. Snack will not be provided. On half-days, there may or may not be time for snack.
***Your child may keep bottled water with a secured cap on his/her desk throughout the day, but only water please.
BIRTHDAY TREATS
Birthday treats may not be food. Students are welcome to bring in a treat for the class (pencils, erasers, etc.), but it can not be edible.
***Birthday party invitations may be handed out in the classroom as long as there is an invitation provided for every child in the class. If it is solely a “boys” party or a “girls” party, then an invitation needs to be provided for every boy or every girl in the class. All other invitations need to be delivered outside of the school setting.
TOYS
Students are permitted to bring toys to school on rainy days for indoor recess. They are also permitted to bring toys to school for outdoor recess, but they have to be responsible for their own items. NO VIDEO GAMES, ELECTRONICS, OR MOCK WEAPONS.
HOMEWORK
Homework will be given this year, but first I would like to allow the children time to adjust to our classroom expectations and routines. Therefore, I will not be assigning homework until further notice.
About Your Child's Homework
Homework will typically be assigned Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Your child will be bringing home the assignments in a homework folder that I will supply. Please check the folder daily and remove any old papers. In first grade there will be about 10 to 15 minutes of homework each night. In addition to this, I strongly encourage you to read with your child for at least 5 minutes each night. Please encourage your child to read along where he/she recognizes known words.
About Your Child's Homework
Homework must be completed and returned the next day in order to receive credit. Also, library books count as homework assignments, so please return them with your child for class on Day 5. My expectation is that library books remain in your child's book bag when not being read. If homework is not returned on time, it will be counted as a homework strike. Every third strike will result in a loss of recess. Four or more homework strikes will be noted on your child's report card.
ASSESSMENT ENVELOPE
Inside your child's Assessment Envelope, you will find assessments that your child has taken. Please review and sign each assessment and return them in the envelope as soon as possible. Each assessment must be returned. They are used to help compile a final report card grade.
TRANSPORTATION
Please be sure to send in a note if your child is to be picked up from school. Please include your child's full name, date, my name, and the name of the person who will be picking up your child.
ABSENCES
Written excuses are required each time your child is absent and are to accompany your child the day of his/her return back to school. Please include your child's full name, date, and my name.
