Ms. Brent's  Social Studies Adventures

Course Description/Goals

The 8th grade Social Studies course provides a study of nineteenth century United States History.  We will study events in our nation's history beginning with the presidency of George Washington and studying to the Progressive era. The first half of the year will focus on a chronological study of history and the second half will be more thematic.  We will not try to study all of the events but focus on key time periods that will promote a better understanding of our nation and government today.  Our studies will also advance reading, writing, technology and critical thinking skills.

The text will be United States History  Beginnings to 1914.  Each student will have online access and we will have a teacher class set in school.  We also will  shared access to COWS(computer laptop carts) and other sources to facilitate learning the topics in the course.

American Studies is the honors level course which intergrates parts of the Language Arts curriuclum with the study of American History.  This course studies the same time periods and topics of the regular eighth grade course.  It also includes some research projects and literature pieces selected for use in this course. The same text is used for both sections.
