Nation's Report Card

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

The National Assessment of Educational Progress is also referred to as "The Nation's Report Card."  It is the only ongoing nationally administered assessment of academic achievement in the United States of America.  It allows one to compare the performance of students in one's state with the performance of students across the United States of America.

It is required that states participate in the NAEP as Title One grants are proposed.  School districts must have documentation of participation in the biennial state-level National Assessment of Educational Progress.  NAEP is required to administer assessments in reading and mathematics to students at ages 9, 13, and 17.  It is required that parents are informated before the administration of the assessment.  Parents have the right to decline permission and therefore, excuse their son or daughter from participating in the NAEP.

Assessment questions are at the same at every level for each state.  The NAEP long-term trend assessment shows how performance of today's students can be compared with students over 30 years ago.
