PECS Language Instructional Strategy

PECS  (Picture Exchange Communication System)  

PECS is most commonly used with Autistic children, but is also appropriate for English Language Learners who are Non-English Proficient or Limited-English Proficient.

PECS is a communication system designed to help individuals quickly acquire a functional means of communication.  It is appropriate for individuals who do not use speech or speak with limited effectiveness.   i.e. English Language Learners

Advantages of PECS

•It is clearly intentional and readily understood.
•It encourages children to initiate conversation.
•Communication is meaningful and highly motivating (helps to meet individual’s needs).
•Materials are cheap, easy to prepare, and portable.
•With PECS, child has an unlimited pool of potential communicative partners.  (Everyone understands pictures)
