1. Show You Think Education and Homework Are Important
- Set a regular time every day for homework
- Have paper, books, pencils and other things needed to do assignments
- Provide a fairly quiet place with lots of light to study and complete homework
- Set a good example by reading and writing yourself
- Stay in touch with your child’s teacher
- Put homework and studying before sports and extracurricular activities
2. Monitor Assignments
- Know what your child’s homework assignments are, how long they should take, how the teacher wants you to be involved
- See to it that the assignments are started and completed
- Make sure TV and video games aren’t cutting into your child’s homework time (this includes studying)
3. Provide Guidance
- Understand and respect your child’s style of learning.
- Does he/she work better alone or with someone else?
- Does he/she learn best when he/she can see things, hear them, or handle them?
- Help your child get organized.
- Does your child need a calendar to keep track of upcoming assignments and events?
- Develop a nightly routine to check that all homework is completed and in bookbag for the next day.
- Encourage your child to develop good study habits by studying a little each night before a big test
- Talk with your child about their homework assignments
- Does he/she understand them?
