Goal – The students will practice their classroom manners and responsibility.

Type 1:
Parenting
|
- A back to school night will provide a discussion involving parents regarding the school and classroom rules and expectations. Parents will be surveyed about what rules they feel are important and what they expect from their children at home (see type 5). If the parent/guardian is unable to attend the meeting then the information will be videotaped and posted on the classroom website. Handouts will also be mailed to the parents who cannot attend also to ensure the information makes it home.
- Parents who speak languages other than English at home will be given the opportunity to share simple words and expressions relating to manners in their native language so that these words can be taught and used in the classroom.

Type 2:
Communicating
|
- A manners log will be sent home with students so that parents can communicate how the student is using the manner of the month at home. The teacher will be able to write back to communicate how the student is using the manner of the month at school.
- A monthly classroom newsletter will be mailed home and posted on the classroom website with a section focusing on the manner of the month (taken from survey results in type 1). Tips and activities on how to incorporate and improve this manner will also be provided in the newsletter.

Type 3:
Volunteering
|
- Parents will be able to come into the classroom once a month and participate in a parent read aloud. The parent will choose a book about manners from a teacher made list of appropriate books. If parents are unable to come into school they can send in a recording of them reading a book and it will be shared with the class. Parents also have the option of presenting the book via Skype. Parents can meet with the teacher prior to coming in to the classroom in order to be trained on expectations for the read aloud.
- Parents can send in prizes that will be used for rewards for students who are excelling in using the manner of the month.
- Parents can come in to the classroom and talk to the students about why good manners are important and why it is important to be responsible. If the parent cannot come in to the classroom, they can send in written information that the teacher will share with the class, or they can provide a recording that will be shared with the class.

Type 4:
Learning at Home
|
- The teacher can help parents encourage good manners at home by providing skits/scenarios about responsibility/manners. Parents can engage in behavior charades with their children in order to practice appropriate behaviors.
- A classroom stuffed animal will be sent home with a different child every Friday in order to help the students practice being responsible. They will have to journal about at least one activity the animal participated in with their family over the weekend. Parents will sign off on the journal. The student will be able to present what they did over the weekend in class on Monday.

Type 5:
Decision Making
|
- Results from the surveys will be analyzed and reported to the parents via the monthly newsletter. Based on the results, the classroom will focus on a manner each month that the parents feel is most important (see type 1 and 2).
- Parents will provide information about what strategies they use at home to teach manners and responsibility and this information will be incorporated into instruction when appropriate.
- Survey parents about what manners are most important and what their child needs to work on. This information will be taken into consideration and used at a personal level for each student.

Type 6:
Community Collaboration
|
- When attending a field trip, guidelines will be set beforehand about appropriate behavior. Students’ use of manners will be monitored closely while on the trip.
- After a field trip, thank you notes will be written by each student and sent to the field trip location.
- Students will participate in a school clean-up project where they will work together to clean up the school and surrounding community. Students will learn that as a responsible citizen it is their duty to keep their community clean and beautiful.
