Goal - The goal is to incorporate working parents into the classroom.
Type 1:
Parenting
- At the back to school night, a discussion will be held on why it is important to expose students to different types of careers. If the parent/guardian is unable to attend the meeting then the information will be videotaped and posted on the classroom website. Handouts will also be mailed to the parents who cannot attend also to ensure the information makes it home.
- Surveys will be distributed to ask families for information regarding if they are a working parents and what their profession is (see type 3 and 5).
Type 2:
Communicating
- Information will be sent home (via email, handout and posted on website) asking parents if they would like to participate in the classroom career explorations. Parents can respond to the teacher telling what career they would like to present.
- A dialogue journal between the teacher and working parents can be sent back and forth between school and home so that parents can communicate if they feel that opportunities are available for them in the classroom. They can also offer suggestions of how they would like to be involved.
- There will be a classroom suggestion box in the main office and online. Parents can feel free to contact me personally via email or the telephone. They can also send in suggestions in a note with their student. (see type 5)
Type 3:
Volunteering
- The parents can come in to the classroom and present to the students about their career. If parents are unable to come into school they can send in a recording of their presentation and it will be shared with the class. Parents also have the option of presenting via Skype.
- Parents can host a field trip for the class at their place of employment and give them a tour of where they work. If the students are unable to physically come to the workplace, the parent can video tape where they work and the video can be presented to the students as a virtual tour. (see type 6)
Type 4:
Learning at Home
- Students can interview their parents about their career and present the information they learn to the class. If neither parent works, students may interview another family member.
- Parents can help students to identify and learn about places of employment in the community. The parent and student can create a visual representation of the place they learned about which can be shared with the class.
Type 5:
Decision Making
- Results from the surveys will be analyzed and reported to the parents so that if multiple parents share one career, they have the opportunity to coordinate their efforts for career exploration and decide how they can best present to the students. Results will be distributed via email, handout and posted on the classroom website.
- The suggestions from the suggestion box will be incorporated into instruction when appropriate.
Type 6:
Community Collaboration
- Students will visit/view employment facilities in the community through parent presentations.
- Thank you notes will be written by students for the parents who come in the classroom and present and also to parents who provide field trips/virtual tours. Thank you notes will also be written for public service field trips.
- Field trips will be organized to visit public service jobs in the community (firefighters, police, hospitals, etc.)
