Time

Learning to tell time is an important math skill that is learned in elementary school. This lesson is a review minilesson on telling time. It contains activities for telling time on an analogue and digital clock. The activities in this lesson actively engage the children and allows for them to get up and move about the classroom. There is a simple PowerPoint that is used to project clocks on the screen for the dry erase clock activity. Children will enjoy this lesson because it is engaging and fun. It allows them to work individually and in partners. It is also a good lesson for the teacher to assess whether or not the students have fully grasped the concepts involved with telling time such as which hand is which, the difference between digital and analogue clocks, and what each number on the analogue clock represents ( ex. 3= 15 minutes).

Below is the lesson, PowerPoint, and images of the materials used to complete this lesson.

 III. Differentiated Learning Activities/Experiences

a.  Pair higher achieving students with struggling students so that they can help each other understand and achieve.

b. For the children that are struggling with telling time give them a different set of clocks to hunt for during the I spy game.

c. For the high achieving students give them a more difficult set of clocks to read during the I Spy game to challenge them.

IV.  Summary

a. Ask the students what the difference is between an analog and digital clock.

b. Ask the students what the hands on an analog clock represent

c.  Ask the students what the numbers on an analog clock and a digital clock represent.

Key Questions:

  • What is the difference between a digital and analog clock?
  • What do the numbers on the clock represent?
  • What do the hands on the analog clock represent?

Closure:

  • Remind the students to practice telling time and review this information for their test tomorrow.

Assessment:

  • Call on students to check for understanding throughout the lesson.
  • Have the students hold up the clock paddles to check for the correct answer and an understanding of the concept.
  • Walk around during I Spy game to make sure the students are completing the work and are not struggling.

Homework:

  • Review time telling for a test tomorrow.

Reflection:

  • Was the lesson completed successfully?
  • Did the students interact well with each other?
  • Did that answer questions that were asked with accuracy?
