What the HECK is Light?
Relationships to know: u = c/l c = 2.98 x 108 m/s (we'll just use 3 x 108 m/s) E = h u h (Planck's constant) = 6.63 x 10-34 Js
Examples:
Suppose a light wave has a frequency of 5.00 x 1015 Hz (cycles per second). What is the wavelength?
Since u = c/l we can find the wavelength using this relationship. u = 5.00 x 1015 1/s and c = 3.00 x 108 m/s so our
problem becomes 5 x 1015 1/s = (3.00 x108 m/s)/l
l = (3 x 108 m/s)/ (5 x 1015 1/s) l = 6 x 10-8 m or 60 nm.
