Course Content Overview

The 6th grade language arts curriculum is based on the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. It emphasizes the characteristics and functions of the English language with a focus on the eight parts of speech, grammar, and spelling. In addition, vocabulary and comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts are essential components, visited and revisited throughout the year.

Objectives:

  • Students will learn to improve their independent reading skills and critically read in all content areas. They will analyze and interpret literature.
  • Students will practice various types of writing: persuasive, informative, and narrative.
  • Students will develop oral speaking techniques and listen to the ideas of others.
  • Students will locate and use literacy information to problem solve and explore ideas.
  • Students will recognize word origins, patterns, and variations in the English language.
  • Students will read fiction and nonfiction text and demonstrate comprehension of text in a variety of ways.
  • Students will recognize how to apply words correctly while writing and speaking.
  • Students will distinguish among the eight parts of speech and use them correctly.

Accelerated Reader

The 6th grade language arts department requires students read and test on two book every 9 weeks. Books must be on their level and teacher approved. Levels are determined by Star testing done periodically throughout the year as well as teacher discretion. In addition to a quiz for the student selected book, a graphic organizer or project must be completed. Graphic Organizers and Projects must have a passed AR test.

*Students must test on the two books within that 9 weeks. In other words, students can’t read 8 books in October and be done for the year. Our goal is to build more independent readers throughout the year. Practicing these literacy skills over the course is essential for growth and progress.

*If a student receives an undesired grade, they can read another book and test. The two highest AR scores for the 9 weeks will be recorded.
