My Blog: Background Info.

Welcome to my blog.

I will be posting various information about "The Virus Debate" from my chemistry class. Mainly the basics information about the virus with various reactiosn to the topic.

My name is Jaren Peterson and my major is Computer Science.

I play football at King's College, and I am currently a freshman. I don't drink because I am  big sober person, so I do not drink or smoke. I still try to hang out and have a good time when I can. My dream is to be as successful as I can in a something I want to do even if it has nothing to do with my major. My other dream(s) is to one day play in the NFL or even the NBA if I decide to play basketball here at King's College! My favorite NFL team are the Minnesota Vikings and my favorite NBA team are the Memphis Grizzlies.

3/23/2013 - Misconception Interviews: The Virus Debate

Virus Debate

For my topic, I
interviewed three people about the concept of viruses. I asked them each two
questions: Are viruses living or nonliving and what is you reasoning? The first
person I interviewed was Nick and he said the viruses were living because they
are a common organism and you see them all over the place. The second person I
interviewed was Frank and his response was that viruses are nonliving because
they use other cells as hosts and attack them. And lastly Matt was the final
person to interview and he said that viruses are living because they can spread
from one organism to another and can replicate themselves.

In the first and third interviews I didn’t expect a
lot because these people aren’t big on science and haven’t taken science in a long time but
the second interview with Frank I did because he takes science courses. I
wasn’t shocked at all from the results.

This concept can go either
way. According to NSTA, the best answer is nonliving but there is no right
answer to this concept so there will be sides taken of whether a virus is
living or nonliving. Maybe compare a living organism to the virus and a
nonliving organism to the virus then we will have a better understanding
or even the answer to if a virus is living or nonliving. Another option to improve
our understanding of viruses is to look into forms of viruses and symptoms that
cause viruses and see if we can find out what specific details may make them
what they are and if they are living or nonliving.

I believe that this is beneficial to soceity because it may the step needed to understand this concept more. To have better precautionsa against them, what they are like and eliminating them from organisms like us for good. Many people would agree that thry do not want a virus inside their system giving them some type of disease. If we could research viruses more in depth with these ideas I have, then we can be closer to having a cleaner and safer society.
