COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to introduce students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). This course will familiarize students with different aspects and careers that are associated with STEM. In addition the course will use STEM related projects to show students how these four disciplines interact together. Students will also be introduced to Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, Excel 2010, and PREZI and BITESLIDE (Web 2.0 Presentation Tools) that will be used to present their findings and analysis of their STEM Projects.
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND GOALS:
Students will learn the basic functions of Microsoft Power Point 2010 that are needed to create a simple presentation. They will learn to incorporate the basic uses of Excel 2010 in STEM Projects. Students will also be able to identify several careers that are associated with STEM. Using STEM related projects, students will understand how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math need to be used, and work together to come up with solutions for STEM project. Students will also understand how to use PREZI and BITESLIDE two Web 2.0 presentation tool to present their findings from their STEM Projects.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED AND TIMELINE:
slide design, slide layout, slide backgrounds, word art, text boxes, graphics,
animation, and transitions. Students will create a PowerPoint Presentation
entitled “Who Am I”
that are STEM related and have students do research on 5 STEM careers they
might like to pursue in the future. Have students use PowerPoint to present
their findings for their STEM Career Project
findings of STEM Project 1. Present to students a sample PREZI presentation,
and instruct them how to create their own presentations. Have the students create
a short PREZI Presentation “Define STEM”.
Stem Project 1 – Students will explore the process of inventing. Students will be able to match current day inventions with similar inventions from the past. Students will discuss the process involved in creating an invention. Students will also view segments from various videos about the inventing process. As a culminating activity students will create their own inventions using common objects. Students will then present their invention using PREZI.
findings of STEM Project 2. Present the students a sample BITESLIDE presentation
and instruct them how to create their own presentations. Have the students create
a short BITESLIDE Presentation on “5 STEM Careers”.
Stem Project 2 – Sstudents will learn how to design and critique experiments with living subjects. Students will explore the steps involved in designing and conducting an experiment. They will view a video of an experiment with rhesus monkeys. Students will discuss the steps involved in the experiment, the ways in which the researchers controlled the variables and how the experiment could be modified. Students will explore several experiments conducted with human children and chimps and compare the methodology used in each. Students will design and conduct their own experiments. They will then present their findings to the class using BITESLIDE to create their presentation. Students will also share their reflections on the process.
