Coordinates

Good morning/afternoon students:

This morning we are going to do a little research on the Coordinate Plane. In Study Island, there is a multiple choice questionairre set up called "Interpreting Coordinates". Below are three articles that you will need to use. Read through the first article and then go to Micorsoft Word and answer the questions that follow. If you get stuck, come back here and look through the other two articles for the answers.

  • You will now import your information into a word document.

1. Open Microsoft Word.

2. Write your name and date at the top.

3. Center a title labeled "COORDINATES"

4. Write the definitions of coordinate plane, x-axis, y-axis, origin, quadrant.

5. Write a SUBTITLE OF "Background information" and answer the following questions:

 1. Where and when was Rene born?

2. He spent time studying different things besides what he studied in college, name one.

 3. Descartes is famous for the quote: “?”

4. Rene Descartes created the coordinate plane. He was later named the “Father of ?”

5. Where did he go to college? What did he study? 

 6. What armies was Rene apart of?

7. Name one of his major writings.

8. Where did he die?

  9. He was convinced that these two things could explain everything in nature. What were the two things?

  • Now start a new section labeled "Ordered Pairs"
  • Show y = 3x - 5. Explain which is the correct coordinates and tell 2 ways to find whether the point (3, 4) is a solution.

After you finish the assignment, I want you to try one game below for 5 minutes straight. Then go to the blog located on the website and answer the questions below.
