Here's the news for the month of January.

In reading, we are working on Unit 3.  Our skills in phonics will be :  compound words, the long i sound spelled with an i, ie, igh, and y, and comparative endings er and est.

Our comprehension skills will be:  comparing and contrasting, sequencing, and fact and opinion.

We will then have a unit review and test.

In spelling, our tests will be on the 8th, 15th, 24th, and the 31st.

In English, our skills will be:  verbs for the past, present, and future, and verbs am, is, was, and were.

In writing, we have begun cursive!!!!  The students are very excited!!!  We will learn all the lowercase letters before we move on to the capitals.

In science, we will be working on the new module for balancing and weighing.

We will also learn more about Martin Luther King in social studies.

In math, we are finishing our current chapter on adding two digit numbers with trading.

We will then begin a mini-chapter on telling time.  The students will learn:  how to tell time to the nearest minute, read the time as after the hour and before the hour, use A.M. and P.M., choose the most appropriate units to measure time, determine elapsed time in hours and half hours, read a calendar, use ordinal numbers, and complete function tables.

Practicing at home with telling time will greatly help your child.  Drawing the hands on the clock can be confusing for some as well as elapsed time!!!!

Please make sure your child is dressed for outside recess.  Having extra clothes at school is a great idea!!!!  Your child should have a spare pair of socks in case of wet feet.

As you can see, January is going to be a very busy month for learning!!!!!Smile
